Toyota Bangladesh has recalled certain models of vehicles for airbag recalls that may not deploy in certain types of crashes. This is according to a notification issued yesterday.
Airbags may contain improperly sealed inflators. That can deploy airbags without enough force to protect passengers in a crash, causing the airbags to explode and spray sharp metal shards directly into the people sitting in front of them.
Both conditions can cause serious injury or death. BMW has already issued a recall for some older vehicles, some of which it said should not be driven. Acura, Honda, Isuzu, and Mitsubishi have also issued recalls. The local office of the world’s leading carmaker said it has recalled vehicles equipped with faulty airbags from Japan’s Takata Corporation citing safety concerns.
Japanese firm Toyota has recalled models including Corolla, Yaris, Vios, Hilux, Alphard, Avensis, Rav4, Fielder, Probox, Vitz, Noah, Voxy, Camry, Sienna, Auris, Fortuner, Dyna, Lexus, Alex, Rumion, Succed, Verossa, Etios, 4Runner, Tundra, Bravis, Runx, Mark II, and Belta etc, manufactured between 2002 to 2017.
Toyota Bangladesh also said it has listed 1,269 new Toyota vehicles. The list includes these defective airbags that can cause serious or even fatal accidents if your vehicle is hit”. For the first time, Toyota Bangladesh recalled vehicles for faulty airbags, said a top official of Navana Limited, the sole distributor of new Toyota vehicles.
Toyota asks the car owner to visit Toyota from here and submit their vehicle identification number (VIN), email, and phone number.
Navan said on its website, “It is important that all affected airbags are replaced as soon as possible and we urge you to check your vehicle immediately”.
Lutful Karim, assistant general manager and marketing head (Toyota) of Navana Limited, said they are offering free airbag replacement.
He added, “We are also providing reconditioned vehicle replacements.”
We know Bangladesh car market is dominated by used (reconditioned) cars.
